Observation Narrative
The plot covers most of the open wetland in the southern opening at Big Spring Bog. This open wetland is situated a few meters from an upland edge. It is profoundly influenced by seepage. The open wetland is gently sloping and water collects in a tiny seepage rivulet and flows towards toward the nearby unnamed creek. Soil is perennially saturated and horizons are poorly developed. The upper 50 cm is soft, dark colored silt loam. Below 50 cm is a firm clay rich material. The firm, clay rich forces ground water to move laterally and the open wetland is a discharge zone. Bedrock here is talc rich and consequently the groundwater is probably magnesium rich and low in essential plant nutrients. Doug Ogle (1982) determined the pH of the water to be 7.5.
